1) We are doing Statistics and we are also collecting Statistics.
2) Why do Social Scientists need Statistics?
The behavior of a society can be quantified in terms of numbers. For example age at marriage of a woman, age of a woman at birth of her first child can be given in terms of numbers. These are indicators of development status of that country. Normally for a developed country these ages are higher than that of a developing country.
3) Why do Doctors need Statistics?
The behavior (well being) of our body can be quantified in terms of numbers. For example a healthy body should have 120/80 mmHg blood pressure, The total cholesterol level is 200 mg/dL or lower. The level of blood sugar for a healthy persons is 4 - 7.8 mmol/L.If blood pressure, total cholesterol and blood sugar are within these levels a person is said to be healthy.
4) Why do Engineers need Statistics?
The strength of a product developed by an engineering design can be quantified in terms of numbers. For example we can test the breaking strength of a cable produced by a company by exerting force measured in Kilo Newtons. With the help of Statistics we compare the quality of cables produced by two companies.
